5A – Identifying Local Opportunities

  1. IN YOUR SCHOOLS - Metro districts decide how to make up for missed class time
    1. http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/169A14F5FB685BD8?p=WORLDNEWS
    2. This Article discussed how various counties around the Atlanta metro area are going to make up for lost school days due to snow.
    3. The problem is that all counties are different so they all need unique solutions to make up for the lost school days.
    4. The problem now rests on the shoulders of the communities and parents of school children since they are being asked for feedback on how they should make up the lost days.
  2. AMAZON - Experts (well, some) predict Amazon will pick Atlanta
    1. http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/169A14F5C1FC83B0?p=WORLDNEWS
    2. After Atlanta did make it on the top 20 of potential places released by Amazon. some studies speculate that Atlanta is going to be the pick for Amazons new Head Quarters. However, it isn't certain and other studies believe it will be Dallas or Boston.
    3. The problem is that all major cities want Amazon to bring its business there, and have to convince Amazon to do so with tax cuts.
    4. the problem belongs to the state and city government officials that need to make a proposal appetizing enough for Amazon to be interested.
  3. FACEBOOK - Facebook said to be interested in Atlanta area for data center
    1. http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/169A14F5D64E0988?p=WORLDNEWS
    2. Facebook is exploring the option of adding a data center 40 miles east of Atlanta.
    3. The problem here is that there was no certainty of the matter, and no company would comment. It is still undergoing and meetings are still to be had to confirm anything official.
    4. The problem here is that Facebook is considering its options, and doing its due diligence when considering its next data center.
  4. DEKALB COUNTY - DeKalb considers cutting penalties for pot possession - Georgia law would have to be changed for county to act.
    1. http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/169A14F5B51C8AD8?p=WORLDNEWS
    2. Dekalb country fights for its right to decriminalize Marijuana.
    3. The problem is that for Dekalb county to be able to change its regulations, Georgia code must first change in order to give individual counties the option to set their own penalties.
    4. This becomes a problem for the state, the county, and the community members. The state has to agree on whether or not it will allow counties to set their own penalties, the county has to fight the state to be able to get their own penalties, and the community members have to pay for all of it in their tax dollars.
  5. RETAIL - Home Depot adding 1,200 employees for spring
    1. http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/169A14F5AFCEAD90?p=WORLDNEWS
    2. Home Depot, the largest Georgia Based company by sales, is going to be adding 1,200 new employees for the Spring. About half will be seasonal, and the other half for good.
    3. The problem in this story is that Home Depot isn't looking specifically anyone with a particular skill set. They are looking for people with a "passion for customer service".
    4. This then becomes a problem for the person that is looking for a job and has a degree or special skill. They are overqualified and may feel that this isn't the job for them. This furthers their own issue because now it becomes an issue of ego.

Comments

  1. I noticed that you chose articles that had different problems to me, some of them I would not have noticed a problem until I read your explanation. You seemed to think critically and if the problem was not obvious, you explained why there was a problem and about who it affected and why. After looking at your approach, I am interested to read more articles and try looking deeper into issues that do not seem like opportunities on the surface.

  2. Hi Cristian,
I also find it interesting how you went about looking for the problems in the stories you chose. The two about Amazon and Facebook looking to locate in Atlanta don't seem problematic but by thinking further about it as you did in your explanations, there shows an underlying issue. That goes to show there is opportunity everywhere as long as you know where to look. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Hello Christian!

It was interesting to see the types of articles you picked, because the types of "problems" you identified were different than the ones I did. I looked for literal problems, whereas it seems like you were able to see regular situations that one might not consider a business problem and recognize the need for a solution, even with something that isn't a business, like the first article about schools and class time.
